A single kettlebell can give you a full-body workout, builds grip and core strength and takes up almost no space. The tricky part for a beginner is picking the right weight and type. This guide explains how to choose the best kettlebell for beginners, what to avoid and three exercises to learn first.

What weight should a beginner buy?

There is no single right answer, but these are common starting points for adults who are new to training. Choose the lower end if you are very new to exercise.

Typical starting weightPoundsKilograms
Many womenLight to moderateAbout 9–18 lb4–8 kg
Many menModerateAbout 18–35 lb8–16 kg

If you plan to use it for swings and squats, it helps to have a heavier option later. Many people end up owning two sizes.

What to look for

  • Handle width and finish. Smooth enough to swing comfortably, but not slippery.
  • Flat base. It should sit stable on the floor.
  • Weight accuracy. Read reviews for consistent weights.
  • Seams and casting quality. Rough seams can bruise your forearm.

Three beginner kettlebell exercises

Goblet squat

Hold the bell at your chest with both hands, elbows pointing down. Sit between your knees, keeping your chest tall, then stand up.

Romanian deadlift

Hold the bell in front of your thighs. Push your hips back with a soft bend in the knees, lower the bell along your legs and stand up by squeezing your glutes.

Kettlebell swing (learn this with coaching if you can)

The swing is a hip hinge, not a squat or a lift with your arms. Start with a lighter weight, snap your hips forward and let the bell float to chest height. If you are unsure about the form, watch a coach or class first.

Frequently asked questions

Is a kettlebell better than dumbbells?

They are different tools. Kettlebells are great for swings, carries and ballistic moves. Dumbbells are easier to adjust for presses and rows. See our adjustable dumbbell guide.

Can I build muscle with one kettlebell?

Yes, though progression is limited by weight. Slow tempos, single-arm and single-leg variations can make a light bell feel harder.

Are kettlebell swings safe?

They are safe when done with good form and a sensible weight. Learn the hip hinge first.
