For a few dollars you can get one of the most efficient cardio workouts in the world. A jump rope is portable, quick and fits any space with enough ceiling height. The hard part is picking the right one. This guide covers the main types, how to size a rope and how to start without wrecking your shins.
Types of jump ropes
| Type | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Basic PVC or beaded rope | Beginners and learning | Cheap and forgiving; slower |
| Speed rope (thin cable) | Faster rotations and double-unders | Needs practice; can sting if you miss |
| Weighted rope | Upper body and conditioning | Heavier handles or rope; lower speed |
| Cordless or ball-bearing ropes | Small spaces and indoor use | Less realistic feel; good for apartments |
| Smart ropes | Counting jumps and tracking | Costlier; not necessary for most |
How to size your rope
- Stand on the middle of the rope with one foot.
- Pull the handles straight up along your body.
- The handles should reach about your armpits (higher for a shorter rope, a little lower for beginners).
- Cut or adjust the rope to fit.
What to look for
- Adjustable length. Helpful for sharing or growing into it.
- Swivel handles. Ball bearings help the rope spin smoothly.
- Comfortable grips. Look for non-slip handles of a good size.
- Durability. Coated cables and replaceable ends last longer.
- Weight. Lighter ropes are easier to learn with.
